A Woman is Coming to the $10 Bill
Alexander Hamilton will be getting a new friend as a woman will be featured on a new $10 bill to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew has announced that a woman will be featured on a redesigned $10 bill in 2020. It will be the first time a woman has been on paper currency in the U.S. since Martha Washington. She was on the $1 Silver Certificate from 1891 to 1896. Yes, it's been THAT long. To say this is overdue would be... I know you see this coming... the understatement of the century.
A decision on who the woman will be won't be made for several months, but Lew wants your input. The U.S. Treasury will be launching a website and is asking for input on social media with hashtag #TheNew10. Hamilton has been on the $10 bill since 1929. A decision on whether he'll appear alongside the woman or be on a separate $10 bill has not been made. Either way, Hamilton stays. The new bill will also be the first to include a feature that allows blind people to differentiate it from other greenbacks.
When considering your suggestions of what woman should be on the $10 bill, factor these two items: By law, the portrait has to be of someone no longer living and Lew wants it to highlight the theme of American democracy.
Who do you think should be on the new $10 bill?
