What's the old saying? "If you have time to lean, you have time to clean".

If you're caught standing around on the job too much, you might hear the expression from your boss. There's always something to do. Stay busy. Keep the workplace neat and tidy. However, if you don't, science says you could actually be a genius.

At least that's what an article in Inc. Magazine recently said. Mark Twain, Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein and many other geniuses, were known to have messy, cluttered workspaces. Why? Essentially, it's a sign of your priorities.

If you have time to lean, you have time to clean. Perhaps. But if you have time to clean, efficiency experts imply you might not have enough important, challenging work on your plate to keep you busy. Whenever I stop in the office of one particular co-worker in the sales department here at the station, she is always stressing over how messy her desk is. After I showed her this article, she is embracing her status as a genius, according to science. She even printed the article off and taped it on her wall (her actual wall--she doesn't have Facebook--which is another issue we're working on with her).

Speaking of Einstein, perhaps he said it best,

"If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?"

So, keep your desk just as messy as you'd like it to be. It means you're working hard, being creative and productive. Meanwhile, I better start cluttering up the studio a little more, before they give me more work to do, in case they think I'm not busy enough.
