A nearly century old building on 1st Avenue has become the first to receive designation as a Cedar Rapids' local historic landmark.

The Ausadie Building at 845 1st Avenue Southeast was built in 1923 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. However, co-owner Tim Oberbroeckling told us that designation didn't protect the property from future demolition. Tim, a member of Cedar Rapids' Historic Preservation Commission, decided his own property would be a great learning tool for other property owners seeking further protection for their properties, via local historic designation.

Earlier this month, the Cedar Rapids City Council officially named the Ausadie building as a local historic landmark list. In case you're wondering, Ausadie comes from the first names of it's original owners, Austin and Sadie Palmer. Austin was known for the Palmer Method of Handwriting.

I'm so glad Cedar Rapids has seen fit to protect our history in such a way. Tim was gracious enough to let us give you a look inside this beautiful 92-year-old building.
