There have been stories the last couple weeks about skyline-shaping high rises and record-setting wind turbines. All this talk of height has my thoughts sky high. Here's a crazy -- and possibly stupid -- idea I had the other day:

Is it possible to build a wind turbine in downtown Cedar Rapids?

Before you tune me out, let me make my case:

  1. It would be unique. I don't know of any city in the world with a wind turbine downtown.
  2. It would define our skyline. Picture a huge wind turbine rising up among the other downtown buildings. That would certainly have a lasting impression on motorists and tourists passing through.
  3. It could be practical. The energy generated by the wind turbine could power all of downtown.

I know there are factors to keep in mind. Like how far the turbine would have to be from other buildings. Or if there are FAA restrictions that would prevent the construction of a turbine in a downtown area. Or if this is even feasible. But hey, I can dream, right?

Let me know what you think. Am I onto something here? Or am I out of my mind?
