It's amazing to me sometimes at the things we get outraged at. Say, a TV commercial. A certain population of the country is up in arms that a Barbie commercial features a young boy playing with the doll. They're under the impression that "dolls are for girls"! This boy should be playing with army men and guns! These gender stereotypes drive me absolutely nuts! It also brings up the question of whether kids play with what they want, or what they are conditioned to want.

As a kid, I remember asking my parents for a doll for Christmas one year. My younger brother had been born that fall, and I wanted to be a mom just like my Mom. To my parent's credit, they didn't cave to societal pressures and norms. They got me the doll. Target took some heat earlier this year when they removed gender-specific signage out of the toy department. What's wrong with that? If you're not secure enough to buy your son a Barbie, or your daughter a GI Joe doll then you need to get a grip. Let kids play with the toys the WANT...not the ones you THINK they should want.
