There's been an arrest in the hit-and-run accident that killed Center Point-Urbana graduate, Emmalee Jacobs, of Urbana last month.

Jacobs, who was a freshman in business at Iowa State, was struck while crossing Lincoln Way at Ash Avenue south of the Iowa State Campus in Ames at 7:04 the morning of December 14. A police officer for Iowa State University found her and took her to the Mary Greeley Medical Center, where she died from her injuries.

Ames police believe Jacobs was hit by a CyRide bus while she was in the crosswalk of Ash Avenue. The bus driver has now been arrested. He's identified as Benjamin D. Clague of Gilbert. Clague, 23, is facing a Class D felony for leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. He's also charged with a simple misdemeanor for failure to obey a traffic control device. Clague was arrested this morning and is being held at the Story County Jail with bail set at $10,300.

Ames Police Commander Jason Tuttle told KCCI, "We believe that he heard what happened that morning and that he continued on his route. On the very next stop that morning, he got out of the bus and did a visual inspection of the bus which he normally doesn't do."

Ames Police asked CyRide to review all the video from their buses from the morning of December 14. A supervisor passed on concerns about the video from Clague's bus and police now say they believe audio from the camera captured the accident and that Clague realized he had hit someone.

CyRide Director of Transit Sheri Kyras says bus number 976 was on the Gold Route and the only person on the bus at the time was the driver. That route takes students in and around the Iowa State campus. Kyras told the Iowa State Daily, "This has hit us extremely hard. This is kind of the heart and soul of what we do, probably the biggest fear we could have at CyRide as we operate on a daily basis."

The crash investigation continues by the Ames Police Criminal Investigation Division.
