This past weekend in the NFL saw some high profile players go down to major injuries. One of those was in San Francisco where quarterback Jimmy Garopollo was lost for the season to a torn ACL. That means that former Iowa quarterback CJ Beathard is the next man in.

Beathard has started for the 49ers before. He played well at times last year, throwing for over 1400 yards with four touchdowns and six interceptions. Certainly not awful numbers for a rookie third-round draft pick. But then San Fran traded for Garopollo, the backup for Tom Brady in New England. Jimmy G was the savior they'd been looking for. He led them to several late-season victories in 2017 and the team rewarded him with a huge $137 million contract in the offseason. A season with so much promise ended against the Chiefs on Sunday.

The team will rally behind Beathard. They also will bring in another quarterback too, most likely a veteran who will be the back up to CJ. Beathard will get his first start of the year this week as the 49ers visit the Los Angeles Chargers.
