2016 To Go Down As Third Wettest In 144 Years

The year 2016 will go down in the record books as one of the wettest in history. As if the flooding in September wasn't a clue, data released yesterday showed just how wet Iowa was this year.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said that the statewide average precipitation for 2016 was 45 inches, nearly 10 inches above normal. That made 2016 the third wettest year since records have been kept. The month of September and the heavy rains over north central and northeast Iowa resulted in record flooding.

The average rainfall total for September was over 6 inches, with some areas seeing more than 16 inches during the month. It was the wettest September since 1986.
