You've probably seen one hovering above a big event. You may even know someone who got one for Christmas. 2015 was the year that the drone went mainstream. No longer a toy for aviation enthusiasts, drones are now being piloted by the kid down your street. But not everyone is thrilled with their growing popularity.

The Federal Aviation Administration estimates that 1.6 million more drones will be purchased in the next year. They'll be purchased by people from all walks of life. Even my 11 year old son can spot a drone in the sky during a big event. We saw one in Green Bay before a Packers game. But for every person who loves them, you're bound to find 10 more that don't. The reasons are many. They intrude on your privacy. They nearly collide with jets and airplanes. They stress out wildlife. They impede rescue operations. And....they collide with other people! We've seen the videos! But perhaps the most alarming fact about drones, is that we know there is someone on the other end operating it. What is the person doing? What are their intentions?

The FAA put into effect the National Drone Registry on December 21st. Drone owners now have to register their toy with the government. They must provide their name, address and email address or risk a possible fine or jail time. The registration is free of charge through January 20th, 2016. After that it will cost five dollars. Will this keep drone haters satisfied? Perhaps. Drone owners aren't happy about the government regulation. But I think its a small price to pay to make sure drones are being used properly.
